Setting up to print Hurst Smart Plates (OSX/InDesign)

  1. In InDesign, select Print from the File Menu.
  2. Click the "Printer" button at the bottom of the dialog.
  3. Be sure the HP LaserJet 5000 Series printer appears in the pop-up menu at the top of the Print dialog box.
  4. From the "Copies and Pages" pop-up menu, choose "Image Quality."
  5. Set the Printed Resolution to ProRes 1200.
  6. Set the EconoMode to "Highest Quality."
  7. Set the Levels of Gray to "Standard."
 
  1. From the "Image Quality" pop-up menu, choose "Printer Features."
  2. From the "Feature Sets:" pop-up menu, choose "Set 1," if necessary.
  3. Set the Media Type to "Rough."
  4. Leave the other settings they are.
 
  1. From the "Printer Features" pop-up menu, choose "Paper Feed."
  2. Click the "All pages from:" radio button and select Tray 1 from the pop-up menu.
  3. From the "Presets:" pop-up menu, choose "Save As."
  4. In the "Save Presets As:" dialog box, name the Presets "SmartPlate" and click OK.
  5. Click "Cancel" to close the Mac OSX Print dialog box.
  6. Click "Cancel" to close the InDesign Print dialog box.
 
  1. From the InDesign File menu, choose Printer Styles and click "Define" to open the Define Printer Styles dialog box.
  2. Click "New..." to Open the Print dialog box.
 
  1. In the "General" submenu, type "ABDickSmartPlate" in the "Name" field.
  2. If necessary, choose HP_LasetJet_5000_Series from the "Printer" pop-up menu.
  1. Choose "Output" in the list on the left side of the Print dialog box.
  2. From the "Color:" pop-up menu, choose "Composite Gray."
  3. Check the "Text as Black" box.
  4. From the "Screening:" pop-up menu, choose "Custom."
  5. In the "Frequency:" field, type "120."
  6. In the "Angle" field, type "45."
  7. Do not worry about the other settings.
 
  1. Choose "Marks & Bleeds" in the list on the left side of the Print dialog box.
  2. Check the "All Printer's Marks" box.
  1. Click the "Page Setup..." button at the bottom of the Print dialog box to display the "Page Setup" dialog box.
  2. From the "Settings:" pop-up menu, choose "Page Attributes," if necessary.
  3. In the "Format for:" pop-up menu, choose HP LaserJet 5000 Series.
  4. Click the Vertical "Orientation:" icon.
  5. If necessary, type "100" in the "Scale:" field.
 
  1. From the "Settings:" pop-up menu, choose "Custom Paper Size."
  2. Click "New" and change "Untitled" to "ABDick 360."
  3. Change the Paper Size and Printer Margins to match those in the illustration at right.
  4. Click "Save."
  1. From the "Settings:" pop-up menu, choose "Page Attributes."
  2. From the "Paper Size:" pop-up menu, choose ABDick360.
  3. Click OK to close the Page Setup dialog box.
  1. Click the "Printer..." button at the bottom of the InDesign Print dialog box to display the "Print" dialog box.
  2. From the "Presets:" pop-up menu, choose "SmartPlate."
  3. Click "Print" to close the Print dialog box.
  1. Click "Setup" in the list on the left side of the Print dialog box.
  2. Set the "Paper Size:" pop-up menu to "Defined By Driver," if necessary.
  3. In the "Page Position" pop-up menu, choose "Center Horizontally."
  4. Click "OK" on the InDesign Print dialog box to close the dialog and save the ABDickSmartPlate Printer Style.
  5. (If desired, you can make a backup of your printer style by clicking "Save" on the Define Printer Styles dialog box. This saved copy can be shared with others so they will have the same settings that you have.)
  6. Click "OK" to close the Define Printer Styles dialog box.
  1. To use the ABDickSmartPlate Print Style during output from InDesign, first choose Print from the File menu.
  2. When the InDesign Print dialog box appears, choose "ABDickSmartPlate" from the "Printer Style:" pop-up menu.
  3. Note that each of the dialog boxes set in the Define Printer Styles process has been replicated in the Print dialog box (check General, Setup, Marks & Bleeds, and Output).
  4. If you click the "Page Setup..." and/or "Printer..." buttons, you will notice that the specifications you applied to those dialogs through the Define Printer Styles process are applied to the document you are about to print.
  5. Make any required changes to match the needs of a particular plate.
  6. Load Smart Plates into Tray 1 of the LaserJet 5000 and open the back exit tray.
  7. Click the "Print" to output the plate.
