HCC STUDENTS VISIT UH DIGITAL MEDIA FACILITIES

The Digital Media Program at the College of Technology has engaged in another exciting collaborative project....this time with the Houston Community College Southwest campus Digital Publishing program. This project builds on a very successful collaboration with Lonestar College Kingwood.

Seventeen HCC West-Loop digital communications students, along with their instructor Mr. Lloyd Schuh, were welcomed on September 4, 2009 by College of Technology faculty and staff for a comprehensive tour of the Digital Media facilities. The students also received a detailed overview of the Digital Media Program from Program Coordinator Dr. Jerry Waite (red shirt in the photo) and Academic Services Center Director Ms. Carmen Carter. Students learned about UH course requirements as well credit transfer opportunities from HCC. Dr. Waite, and lab managers Can Le and Harold Halliday, also gave HCC students advice on common errors to avoid before submitting their design for print reproduction.

The collaborative project between UH and HCC requires each of the participating HCC students to use their knowledge of InDesign software to create a four color process color postcard suitable for reproduction on the Image Transfer Lab’s two color offset printing press. Students will then upload their projects to UH Digital Media Lab Manager, Mr. Can Le, who will check the files for flaws using a process called preflighting. If changes are necessary, Mr. Le informs the students. Otherwise, students in the GRTC 3352 Image Transfer course at UH will use their knowledge of offset printing technology and reproduction process controls to reproduce the projects for the HCC students. HCC students will be attendance during the reproduction process. So, they will gain experience of the print reproduction process from start to finish.
