Leadership • Creativity • Print • Graphics • Web & Media Design

These are the areas that are explored in Graphic Communications Technology at the University of Houston. By using your leadership talents, you can create a communications tapestry by weaving together people and the technologies of print, multimedia, and web design. Effective contemporary graphic communication requires a mix of communications technologies: still- and motion-multimedia and web sites in addition to printed media.

Graphic Communications Technology

Graphic Communications Technology, a field of study within the Technology Leadership and Supervision program (TELS) in the College of Technology, prepares technologically savvy students to manage print and media projects. Graduates respect the symbiotic relationship between art and technology and, as a result, bridge the gap between graphic designers and technicians who specialize in print or other visual media. Relevant job titles include customer service representative, salesperson, job planner, scheduler, estimator, media buyer, quality control specialist, production supervisor, production manager, and general manager. Depending upon the student’s temperament, careers in graphic design, prepress, press production, and binding and finishing may also be pursued. Graphic Communications is a dynamic and ever-changing field, and is ranked among the largest industries in the United States.

Graphic Communications Technology (GRTC) courses are offered by the Information and Logistics Technology Department in the University of Houston’s College of Technology. GRTC courses cover bitmapped and vector computer graphics, visual design concepts, prepress technologies, web design, multimedia technologies, image transfer technologies, materials, processes, costing, estimating, and industry trends. Courses include theory-rich lectures as well as hands-on and enjoyable activities conducted in our state-of-the-art laboratories on the latest equipment. Each student also completes a senior project and an internship. You can learn more about the graphic-communications-specific classes and assignments by browsing http://graphics.tech.uh.edu.

Technology Leadership and Supervision

Graphic Communications Technology directly fits into the Technology Leadership and Supervision program. The success of today’s businesses and organizations demands leadership that is informed, forward-thinking, and able to optimize the capabilities of knowledge-based workers and the solutions they create. The Technology Leadership and Supervision degree develops exactly this set of skills: TELS can give you the advantage to be a leader in the field of graphics. You’ll learn about leadership, the creation of organizational vision and value, and the development of human resources while leading technological change. Not only will you learn how to lead, but you’ll also learn the specific technologies of graphic communication so that you can communicate clearly with those with whom you work or those you supervise. The Bachelor of Science in Technology Leadership and Supervision at the University of Houston promotes a rigorous focus on the combination of leadership and technical scientific competence with analytical, organizational, and human resource skills.
